Language learning for little ones!

Fun, Free and Effective

Novakid Jr. is a colourful and joyful language app designed for kids aged 2-6. The goal was to build an immersive world where learning happens naturally through play.

As Lead Designer, I drove the creative vision across art direction, UX/UI, character design, and game mechanics.

CHARACTERS

The star of the show (pun intended) is Nova, a big ball of energy who just won’t sit still.

I designed Nova to be a warm and encouraging guide who’s ready for any challenge. If Nova has too much sugar he becomes SUPER NOVA and showers kids with rewards!

Let the children play

To keep young learners engaged, the games needed to balance educational value with genuine fun. Since children aged 2-6 can't read yet, our core rule was show, don't tell.

We kept the mechanics intentionally intuitive, relying on tap, drag-and-drop, and speech recognition. Each game also folds in mini-story arcs with unexpected, rewarding payoffs.

Starting simple

In early stage games, children match visual cues with spoken words using repetition to build a strong foundation.

Introducing gentle right & wrong feedback lets us confirm that learners are recognising and retaining new words.

Test your knowledge

Using voice recognition, kids practice repeating words out loud. Clearer pronunciation earns higher scores and bigger rewards.

Taken off the lead

The ultimate challenge asks kids to answer open prompts like "What is this?" moving them from word recognition to active speech.
